The Swedish Reference Group for Antibiotics (SRGA) is organised by the Swedish Association of Medicine and the Swedish Institute for Infectious Disease Control. The SRGA subcommittee on methodology (SRGA-M) is organised by the section of microbiology of the Swedish Association of Medicine. SRGA was formed in 1976 and SRGA-M in 1986.
The members of SRGA are specialists in infectious diseases, clinical microbiology, pediatrics, otorhinolaryngology, clinical pharmacology and community medicine. The members of SRGA-M are specialists in clinical microbiology.
SRGA and SRGA-M shall determine MIC- and zone diameter breakpoints for new antibiotics and continuously revise breakpoints of older antibiotics.
SRGA-M shall uphold a standardised method for susceptibility testing in Sweden and together with the Swedish microbiology laboratories uphold methods for internal quality control and external quality asessment and contribute to the national surveillance of antimicrobial resistance.
SRGA-M closely collaborates with colleagues in Denmark, Norway and the United Kingdom (BSAC).
SRGA and SRGA-M shall promote the rational use of antimicrobial drugs in Sweden.
SRGA and SRGA-M cooperate with other national breakpoint committees in Europe through EUCAST towards a harmonisation of MIC-breakpoints in Europe.
Currently Inga Odenholt is the chairman of SRGA and Gunnar Kahlmeter of SRGA-M. Barbro Olsson-Liljequist is the scientific secretary of both organisations.
