Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. Susceptibility testing of S.maltophilia is difficult. Technically the results vary pronouncedly with temperature, incoculum, and the medium used. The relevance of the bacterium in clinical samples is almost always difficult to acertain. The clinical efficacy of antimicrobial agents other than trimethoprimsulfamethoxazole (co-trimoxazole) has not been validated. The use of aztreonam, caftazidime and fluoroquinolones (moxifloxacin more active than others) in various combinations have been suggested and tried in single cases.
The results below are on ISA (Oxoid), semi-confluent inoculum, 18 - 24 h incubation in ambient air, at 35-37 C.

Resistensbestämning av S.maltophilia är svårt. Patogeniteten är oftast tveksam varför bakteriens relevans alltid måste ifrågasättas, oavsett provmaterial. Den kliniska effekten av behandling med andra medel än trimetoprimsulfa är okänd eller dåligt dokumenterad. Vidare föreligger tekniska problem vid resistensbestämning – resultaten är kraftigt temperaturberoende och varierar med vilket medium som användes. Om trimetoprimsulfa inte kan användas kan man försöka med kinoloner (varvid moxifloxacin synes ha högre aktivitet än övriga) eller aztreonam eller ceftazidim.
Resultaten ovan är med Isosensitest (Oxoid, Medium A i tabeller), semikonfluerande växt, 18 - 24 h inkubation i luft vid 35 - 37 C.
