SSAC

Scandinavian Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy

The Scandinavian Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (SSAC) was founded in 1983 as a non-profit scientific organization where scientists and clinicians from the five Nordic countries meet to discuss subjects within antimicrobial chemotherapy in the broadest sense of the word encompassing all subjects within infectious diseases and microbiology including vaccinology and immunotherapy. The official language of SSAC is English.

Eligible for membership are specialists in microbiology and infectious diseases, scientists who are engaged in research within the fields of antimicrobial chemotherapy, infectious diseases and microbiology. Medical drug companies are welcome to join as non-voting corporate members. Application for membership can be made from the website. All applications should be directed to the present Chairman. The board decides on new membership in conjunction with board meetings (usually twice a year) and the result ("new membership") is posted on the website.

The Society has members from all five Nordic countries. The Nordic countries are represented on the board (3 members from Sweden, 2 members from Denmark, 2 from Norway, 1 from Iceland, and 1 from Finland).

The purpose of the Society is to facilitate the acquisition and spreading of knowledge in the field of antimicrobial chemotherapy. The society organizes meetings, working groups and courses. Since the great majority of leading experts in the field of antimicrobial chemotherapy in the Nordic countries are members of the Society, this secures interesting and stimulating discussions at the meetings. The SSAC also aims at being a meeting place for discussions between the scientific community and the drug industry.

The Society stimulates research through distributions of grants and by establishing contact between its members. The SSAC Foundation for Research in Antimicrobial Chemotherapy was founded in 1994, and it has a Board consisting of five members, all of whom are members of the SSAC. The Chairman is appointed by the Swedish Society of Medicine, and the four Board members are all officers of the SSAC board. The foundation supports medical research in the field of therapy of infectious diseases through research grants, research stipends, and contributions to scientific meetings organized by or under the auspices of the SSAC.

The Society holds its annual meeting each Autumn in one of the five Nordic countries. The meeting is planned and organized by a local committee in close collaboration with the board of the Society. The annual meeting usually lasts three days, and it is possible for corporate members to organize satellite symposia in collaboration with the Organizing Committee and the Board. Together with other organizations SSAC can sponsor advanced international courses within the fields of microbiology and/or infectious diseases.

The SSAC is a member of the International Society of Chemotherapy (ISC) and is its regional society in the Nordic countries. The ISC arranges the International Congress of Chemotherapy (ICC) every second year.
